Buffalo is seen as to be low maintenance, have high shade tolerance, good wear tolerance and possess a darker green colour even throughout Winter.

- Watering

Buffalo varieties may require irrigation 2-3 times a week incorporating one deep water cycle during periods of hot weather and or drought to maintain profile moisture levels. Watering requirements and frequencies will decrease during the cooler months.

- Fertilising & nutrients

Buffalo responds well to instantly available nutrients yet is not seen as sustainable year round. CRN Controlled Release Fertilisers or slow release fertilisers are typically seen as more beneficial to overall plant health.

- Mowing and trimming

Buffalo varieties require to be mown on a regular basis this will vary depending on position and growth rate. Buffalo prefers a higher cut of 30-50 mm yet can be cylinder mown at a lower height. Ensuring you have sharp blades on your mower is a must with this variety.

- Weeding

Buffalo varieties have a low tolerance to many herbicides available on the market be sure to read the label prior to purchase to see if the herbicide is suitable for Buffalo varieties. Buffalo’s thick growth habits allows this variety to out compete some varieties of weeds. Weed control is performed on a need to basis.

- Things to look out for over the year

Buffalo varieties respond well to renovation procedures conducted in growing season when the plant is actively growing, this variety of turf is known for creating heavy thatch layers and becoming spongey under foot due to the growth habits. Care must be taken with Buffalo when renovating so the above ground stolons (runners) are not damaged beyond repair. Renovating Buffalo grass reinvigorates the plant and will benefit from this process.
