Kikuyu is a warm season broadleaf grass that is well known for its aggressive growth and drought tolerance. Kikuyu grass grows exceptionally well in full sun, presents great colour is hard wearing. Kikuyu is commonly used in sports turf and can tolerate being mown at low heights.

- Watering

Kikuyu maintains high drought tolerance when established. Irrigation cycles highly depend on your location. When Kikuyu is showing signs of stress or appears dry, deep watering cycles become more beneficial to maintain profile moisture levels. This will decrease during the cooler months.

- Fertilising & nutrients

Kikuyu responds well to fertilisers with instantly available nutrients and will provide a flush of growth yet is not seen as sustainable year-round. CRN Controlled Release Fertilisers or slow-release fertilisers are typically seen as more beneficial to overall plant health.

- Mowing and trimming

Due to Kikuyu’s aggressive growing characteristics Kikuyu requires to be mown on a regular basis regardless of the height of cut you choose this can vary from every second day to once a week.

- Weeding

Kikuyu has a very low tolerance to many herbicides available on the market be sure to read the label prior to purchase to ensure the herbicide is suitable for Kikuyu. The density of Kikuyu when established allows this variety to out compete some varieties of weeds. Weed control is performed on a need to basis.

- Things to look out for over the year

Kikuyu responds well to renovation procedures conducted in growing season when the plant is actively growing, this variety of turf is known for creating heavy thatch layers that can create issues including poor infiltration, decrease in nutrient uptake and disease. Renovating Kikuyu reinvigorates the plant and will benefit from this process. Kikuyu is known to repair quickly post renovation.
